Learning Styles And Its Impact On Students Essay - 1449 Words

At the beginning of this assignment I was completely sold on the idea of learning styles and that they were the â€Å"norm†. After further research I have found that learning styles may not work, yet the current research literature is full of papers which advocate their use. The contrary is that learning style segregation can undermine education as a research field and can likely have a negative impact on students. It is in everyone’s interests for educational research and resources – time, money, effort, to be directed toward those educational interventions which demonstrably improve student learning, and away from those which do not. Research on Learning styles or the myth within need to be a priority, students are slipping through the cracks and we need to figure out why. How do we learn? â€Å"Learning styles† describe the way people process incoming information. There are several schools of thought pertaining to â€Å"learning styles†. According to Geake,2008, there are three learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinestitc. While most people use a combination of â€Å"learning styles†, they generally have one or two styles that are dominant. In most developed countries, relative poverty is where annual revenue plus the profit made is below the median, thus creating a point of drawing a poverty line. It has been asserted globally that poverty results from wealth distribution issues, which clearly defines the line between the poor and the rich. Poverty has been talked of for quite a long time globally, but the issues surrounding the linkages between the population earning high wages and the population earning low wages have not been addressed officially. This has made the gap between the rich and the poor widen gradually in the global context. Levels of poverty have been estimated and announced ov er the years, but the credibility of such figures has been put to question by many concerned authorities. It has been argued by many policy makers that the actual rates of poverty in the world precede the official figures that are indicated by most reports (Pinto, 2011, p.43). However, the UNU Report of 2006 with regard to data of 2000 was the first report that covered all nations worldwide, while exploring household wealth components such as infrastructure, land and assets that were financial. According to the report, of the total population in the world, 98% are ranked as being poor, whereas only 2% are rated as rich (UNU-WIDER, 2006, para.1). The rich population own about half of the world’s wealth and the other half is shared by the large, poor population. These figures have raised controversies over the relationship that exists between poverty and wealth distribution globally. People have had different views and contribution towards the analysis of issues that poverty re volves around, and there has been a notion that poverty represents an unjust distribution of wealth. How true is this assertion? Ethics and Justice related to Wealth Distribution and Inheritance Wealth is characterized by the ownership of assets and resources, having the potential of generating income (Heilbroner, 1987, p. 880). The distribution of wealth raises the issue of the rich and the poor. The constructs of poverty have been from many dimensions given that its perception from the view points of the rich and the poor totally have a stark contrast. For instance, many people perceive poverty from the standpoint of ill-being, for they associate poverty with the scenario of a deprivation in social, physical and material needs. In this case, poverty is purely physicality as well as a state of mind. From this ethical point of view, the aspect of well-being and ill-being as brought out psychologically corresponds to a wide spectrum of experiences attached to poverty. Similarly, the grouping of the poor as being homogenous is faced out by the fact that the experiences of poverty are often personal. In critical cases, the poor end up lacking basic needs to an extent death, due to malnutrition (Fitzgerald & Constantine, 2011, p.34). Given that extremely small shares of the world’s wealth are received by the majority of the world’s population, it is inevitable that the people who are ranked in the category of the poor will experience poverty. Social Norm Breaking Essay Essay In every aspects of society, there are social norms. If there are no norms, we would be living in a world full of chaos because norms define which behaviors are normal and which behaviors are not normal. These social norms are important to know so people do not act in a particular way that would cause Deviance, behavior that violates norms. On February 13th, 2015, I was in my sociology class to obtain some new information and increase my knowledge. It was a regular chilly winter morning and my sociology teacher told the class to break a norm in our society as a research experiment. This to me felt like a Cultural Shock, personal uneasiness one feels when entering a new culture, because as a Korean, being respectful and following the rules are a huge part in the Korean culture. I definitely did not expect a teacher, who should be telling us to not break rules and behave in a respectful manner, to tell us to break the rules and possible be rude by breaking social norms. Although I was shocked, I was very excited to go out there and break some norms. I began this experiment on February 19th, 2015 in Palisades Park, New Jersey. Now what is interesting about Palisades Park is that it is a Korean town. There were a lot of Korean cafes and bakeries all around the area. And just like me, they all had Cultural Particularities, traits that are particular to a culture. I was very interested in recording the reactions of the people in this town while I would be breaking the norm. I first entered a bakery called Shilla. There were quiet a few people at the place. I observed and it seemed as though most of them were Korean elders socializing and minding their own business. I walked up to the cash register feeling a little bit nervous. The cashier looked very friendly and had a pleasant smile on her face. As soon as I approached her, I asked her, â€Å"Can I get a Big Mac, please.† She replied, â€Å"Excuse me?† And I told her the same thing. She had a very puzzled look on her face and that pleasant smile was no longer there. I observed and in my head I went, oh shoot. What is she going  to say? Is she going to kick me out of the store? She politely responded, â€Å"Im sorry, but I think you came to the wrong store. We dont have Big Mac here. Please go elsewhere.† Unable to contain myself, I burst out into laughter. I looked around and the Korean elders were all looking at me funny. I was definitely able to tell that they were all judging me of how rude I was being and how much of a nuisance I was creating. Feeling embarrassed, I ran out of the store quickly. Although I felt like I failed on my first try, I did succeed on examining the reactions of the cashier and the other customers in the store as well. I moved on to the next store for a second try. This time I was going to not mess up and keep asking for a Big Mac to further see more reactions. The store that I entered was a bakery/cafe called Paris Baguette. I again looked around and observed the area. The social setting was the same as when I was in Shilla except this time the cashier up at the cash register did not look too friendly. I felt like the cashiers Social Interaction, the ways people respond to one another, was not going to be too polite if I asked for a Big Mac. But I did not let that stop me from experimenting. So I confidently walked up to the register and loudly spoke and asked the cashier, â€Å"Can I get a Big Mac, please?† The cashier had a face of a pissed off bulldog and she rudely responded, â€Å"Do we look like McDonald to you?† I was a bit intimidated but I did not let that stop me and I continued, â€Å"Well I dont care. Im asking for a Big Mac. Can you please give me a Big Mac? French Frie s too while youre at it.† She rudely responded again, â€Å"Look! Im sorry, but we dont have Big Mac. This is a Korean cafe/bakery, not freaking McDonald!† In response, I told her to go buy me a Big Mac and sell it to me. At this point, she was not going to take anymore of my nonsense and cursed me off and asked me to leave the store before she calls the cop to make me leave. It was time to break the act because if I continued on, I would have gotten into trouble. I quickly explained to her it was a sociology experiment and told her to relax. She did not looked too pleased. As I began to walk out of the store, I observed the Social Structure, the way society is organized into predictable relationships. I apologized to the Korean elders around me who gave me a disgusted look. They told me I was incredibly rude and told me to not live my life like that, which sounds like a bit of a harsh thing to  say to a person, but I expected this kind of a response from the elders because of their Cultural Particularities and their Social Structure on respect and orders. They completely ignored the fact that the cashier was also incredibly rude to me with a horrible customer service. But ultimately, I was the villain of the scene because I was the one breaking social norm. In conclusion, my experiment turned out to be pretty successful. I was able to observe and obtain data on how people in the bakeries and cafes react to unusual behavior that is not in their social norm. I was able to see and understand many different sociological concepts through my experiment and what can be the cause and the effect of breaking social norm. In todays world, this concept of social norm will continue on in our society as long as we live in a orderly world of civilians that socialize and live with proper manner.

Book Report on Wreck! :: essays research papers

First Entry – Suggestion Number 1 – Page 50 This fiction book is called â€Å"Wreck† and was written by Allan Bailie. The main characters are Ian Foster and Reene Thompson, they are two normal teenagers. Reene was told to baby-sit Ian while his parents are away. During this period a cyclone hits Albatross Beach and they barely survive it. Soon they seek shelter in a rusty old freighter on the beach. After, the cyclone erupts again and sets the boat out to sea. While on the boat they experience many strange happenings and realise they are not alone. Second Entry – Suggestion Number 6 – Page 80 I believe the writer was trying to keep suspense and did this by not giving any extra info and by putting in a few false alarms to keep you on your toes. The writer is also very descriptive which adds greats atmosphere and further suspense. I think the writer has a good imagination to be able to write in such a way. Another skill the author has is, he knows when and when not to be descriptive, that helps because a whole page description on something that has no relevance at all is not necessary Third Entry – Suggestion Number 5 – Page 100 Ian is shy and doesn’t seem very confident in the book; Ian explains it’s probably because of his dad who’s always putting him down because he can’t do something right. There isn’t mush about his interest in the book because the author keeps to the story line most of the time. Ian is afraid that he isn’t to his father’s expectations and that his father hates him. His experiences throughout the book make him a stronger person and I think he’s better for it. Reene also helps shape Ian into a better person. She is responsible, outspoken and strong-willed, Ian picks ups picks up a bit of it. Ian comes out to have a stronger mind, isn’t as reliant on others and isn’t afraid to voice his opinions. Fourth Entry – Suggestion Number 8 – Page 120 To me the ending wasn’t much of a surprise because they were on a boat with an unknown monster, they defeat the monster and are rescued which wasn’t much of an ending. This of course doesn’t mean the book is boring, just predictable. There are also many little things that happen along the way to keep this book interesting enough to keep reading.

There are several types of research methodology, however this discourse is mainly focused on what would be described as a case study, since its primary effort is to review the potential that Pepsi Saudi would emerge from its decision to implement Balance Scorecard as a winner. So this will use both quantitative and qualitative research framework . This section will outline the qualitative and quantitative research methods, the case study research method, and the questionnaire research method. QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH METHODOLOGY. Usually quantitative research employs the method that is based on testing of theories. It uses measurement of numbers, and statistical analysis to perform its studies. The idea behind quantitative research is often to ascertain that a generalized theory or the prediction of a theory will be confirmed by using quantitative method. So it starts with the hypothesis and the theories that requires to be tested. The approach of quantitative research include the use of instruments, usually formal and generally recognized instruments. It is conducts experiments with an underlying expectation that a consensus would be arrived at. It usually aims to arrive at a predictable  generalization, and it would normally have a causal explanation. It can control and manipulate the subject, with deduction and analysis. The idea is really to establish consensus by reducing data to numerical indications. So the goal of quantitative research is the determination a given prediction, it wants to see that such generalization could be verified or confirmed. In general the quantitative methodology assumes that there is an objective reality which is independent of the person doing the research, it also takes the position that the subject of study can be done in an objective manner. The researcher must maintain independence from the research object. And the research is not expected to be value affected. In other words the researcher must make sure that he or she does not become a part of the research. This is known as being value free of the research itself. The quantitative methodology tests cause and effect by using deductive logic. When done correctly a quantitative research should be able to predict, and explain the theory in question. (O’brien 1998). TYPES OF QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH: There are generally three different types of quantitative research, experimental research,  qausi -experimental research, and surveys. EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH: In experimental research, the researcher is active, as opposed to a passive agent who simply observes. The researcher is able to manipulate the subject that is being studied, or at least some part of the subject that is being studied. Also experimental research entails that the research must use some kind of control in the research process, usually a control group would be one of the elements of experimental research. Also the researcher would apply random selection to the control group. The research applies manipulative element to some of the subjects under study but he will not apply the same manipulation to other subjects. So the research uses what is known as â€Å"placebo† in some of the experimental subjects, and not in others. QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH: Quasi-experimental research does not use the control random system that experimental research uses, but it can manipulate some independent variables. So in order to five authenticity to the result of the quasi-experimental research, the researcher can implement some controls, but he does not use random system. SURVEYS: Surveys uses cross- sections or longitudinal studies, and questionnaires in its research. It uses data and conducts interviews with the aim of making an estimation about the given subject of study. Surveys does not involve experimental interventions. Survey are considered advantageous because it could be used to study many subjects, in many topics. Also the information garnered from surveys could be used for different purposes. Although surveys are usually expensive, but they are considered economical because the results could be applied to various things. (Polit 1989).

An Abuse of Power Essay

Abigail is the most prominent example of power and manipulation, with far worse repercussions, fooling the court and pretending to be God’s voice to get what she wants. Hale declares before the court that â€Å"private vengeance is working through this testimony,† (105) when Proctor attempts to show the court Abigail’s machinations. She recognizes the Puritan’s fear of God, and their fear of witches, to manipulate those in power, gaining her own strength in the court and causing mass hysteria to turn in her favor. Her rise to power begins even before the hysteria, starting with the group of girls from the forest, but her tactics are no different: manipulate others to save herself. They fear being caught, and she plays to their terror, telling them if they â€Å"breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, [then she] will come to [them] in the black of some terrible night and [she] will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder [them]† (19). This threat crafts her iron grip on the girls, allowing her to lead them against the town, lying and condemning folk to save themselves from strife over their actions. Abigail’s hold remains on the girls all through the play, forcing even the most honest to turn from truth and continue their lies â€Å"when people accused of witchery confronted [them] in court, [they] would faint, saying their spirits came out of their bodies and choked [them]† (98). This is evident in the scene where Mary confesses their lies, admitting they â€Å"never saw no spirits† and â€Å"were never threatened or afflicted by any manifest of the Devil or the Devil’s agents† (98). Abigail manipulates the court, using the power she’s gained to say she does God’s work, and Mary falls back to her, carrying out Abigail’s wishes by condemning John Proctor. This is similar to how Abigail got rid of Elizabeth by accusing her in her newfound place of power, so she could be with John, a fact that he addresses, refusing to â€Å"give [his] wife to vengeance† (73) when they come to arrest her. Abigail’s attitude of controlling the girls by vicious fear of witchery is easily comparable to that of the boy Jack in Golding’s Lord of the Flies. Jack recognizes the weakness in the group of boys, using their gnawing fear of â€Å"the beast† to turn them to his side, against Ralph. Though much more direct, Jack uses his power to threaten the boys on Ralph’s side, such as Samneric, to hail to savagery and chaos, much like Abigail did to Mary. He dominates the island, getting what he wants, and eliminating those such as Piggy and Ralph, who stand in his way. Abigail’s tactic of lying, manipulating fear and abusing her power in court grants her the same reward of getting her way, and pushing aside enemies like Elisabeth. The only difference is that Abigail’s actions come with far bigger consequences, more than Parris, Putnam or Danforth, fleshed out on a larger scale of victims who fell in the face of her machinations. In the end, Arthur Miller’s Crucible is a fine study of manipulation and abuse of power, shown in various forms, through vicious antagonists, always exploiting Salem’s fear to achieve their own selfish goals and further themselves on the social food chain. What Miller is perhaps attempting to demonstrate through this play is that those in positions of power will always abuse it, especially when faith is involved, because of the â€Å"manipulation of that faith to create fear and control† (Bardem), as have done Danforth, Parris, Putnam and Abigail.

Compare Art essays I will compare and contrast two pieces sculptures from the Ancient Egypt Era. The first is a block style statue of a man sitting. It is a small sculpture dates back to circa 664 - 525 B.C.E. The second sculpture is also a small block style statue of a man sitting. This statue dates back to circa 1279 - 1213 B.C.E. The first figure is a seated man with hieroglyphic text carved across the front and sides of the sculpture. This type of statue is usually placed in tombs or temples. It is believed that the markings on the statue are offering formulas that were believed to bring blessings to the deceased in the afterworld. This statue is made of a sold block of stone that and has detailed image of the head and shoulders. The body and arms of the man are only slightly noticeable because of the lack of focus on this area. The area of the body is mainly an outline with the text carved around the large block section. We can tell from the sculpture that he is sitting with his knees bent and his arms crossed over his knees as if he is sitting and watching over the deceased. The second sculpture is a very similar piece in the fact that it is also a man sitting. It was also carved in the same style as the first. We have a man who is sitting with his knees bent. Again we can see that the arms are crossed over the knees as he sits. His piece has less carvings of text on the side as the other statue. In this sculpture we see as small carving of what is believed to be the god of Ptah-Tatenen. This piece was placed in the tomb of Nedjem and was to represent Nedjem for eternity. The style of both pieces was the same. The detail on each piece was slightly different. The sculpture took more detail to create the small likeness of the god between the legs in the second sculpture. Both sculptures have a detailed face of a man and the outline of a man sitting.
